CLEOS in roppongi is the first black owned club.

I think that the clubs in Shibuya are pretty old. In contrast these clubs such as Harlem often don't let black people in! (or any foreigners unless they are with japanese people)

About the same time it got popular everywhere else .. in the early eighties. The movie "Wild Style" in 1983 was popular in Japan and this was around the time hip hop style starting showing up in areas such as Shibuya in Tokyo.

Vbuenos is the most famous. It is sometimes shut down by the Tokyo government for its young clients ... under 20. They are getting strict with ID now.

It is a good place but perhaps its best days have passed.

Japanese were into every popular kind of American music since the Taisho era (1920s). They were into Jazz from very early times for example.

Naturally all things western were banned during WWII but western culture came back with a vengence after the war. Soul dancing was very popular in the 1970s for example.

It is a word to use women that have the hip hop look in Japan. They typically dress in the hiphop style and may have deeply tanned skin or even dreads.

It does not have derogatory meaning however the roots of the word are very derogatory. It comes from the Japanese for black and prostitute. So the origins of the word mean the girl is prostituting herself to black culture or something like that.
