The Beaver is the national animal of Canada. The Canadian Beaver is a distinct from the European beaver (but same as the American beaver).
When Europeans first came to Canada there were millions of Beavers in Canada. But with the expanding fur trade of the 17th and 18th century Beavers were hunted to the brink of extinction.
