The primary tool of Feng Shui is a Chinese compass (Luopan). The Luopan is used to determine the correct correlations between human lifestyle and the universe. Before the invention of the compass the Chinese relied on astronomical observations for such analysis.
The exact origins of Feng Shui are unknown but buildings built in Feng Shui configurations and Feng Shui star maps have been discovered that date back to 4000 BC.
Today, Feng Shui is still widely practiced in China and is gaining popularity in Asia and the West. Modern Feng Shui is used to situate buildings and graves and for interior design. Many factors are taken into consideration such as orientation, age, interaction with surroundings, micro-climates, landscape and vegetation.
