Himeji (姫路) is large city of over half a million residents in Western Japan. It is the site of Himeji Castle, probably the most popular castle in Japan. It is less than an hour from Osaka or Kyoto and makes a nice side trip. There are other interesting sites here including Himeji Safari Park (Himeji Central Park), Engyouji temple, Himeji Botanical Gardens and Mount Seppiko.

Himeji Castle(姫路城) is a complex of 83 buildings. It is the most popular castle to visit in Japan and is an excellent example of feudal era Japanese architecture. Some interesting trivia about the castle: it was sold in 1871 for 23 yen (about 23 cents). The castle was almost completely destroyed during WWII and was restored starting in 1956.
