Japanese Emperor

The Emperor of Japan is the symbolic ruler of Japan. Under Japan's constitution, the Emperor is the "symbol of the state and the unity of the people". Basically, the Emperor is the ceremonial figurehead of the country.

Historically the emperor of Japan has been viewed as a God (the idea of Arahitogami) and has been the leader of the military and government. However, Japanese emperors have always been controlled by political forces.

Akihito

Akihito is the Emperor of Japan. Akihito has been Emperor since 1989 and is the 125th Emperor of Japan.

Akihito's reign demarks the "Heisei" era (平成). In other words, the Japanese system of dates goes by the reigning Emperor at the time. For example, 2008 is "heisei 20" in the Japanese system of years.
