Japanese Erotic Art
Japanese Erotic Art is known as Shunga or spring pictures in Japan. Erotic motifs were common in the Ukiyo or 'floating world' school of art in the Edo period (1600-1868).
Ukiyo depicted the common people, sometimes in the brothel quarters of cities. Often erotic art was made into wood block prints that could be reproduced in quantity (although not mass produced). Floating world art was popular during the Edo period and was distributed as prints, graphic novels and calendars. During the Edo period it was widely believed that sex protected one from misfortune and keeping a Shunga around the house was regarded as good luck.
Subjects in Ukiyo paintings typically have idealised features. The feeling is often witty and comical. Not to mention sexually imaginative.
At the close of the 18th century government censorship increased due to Western influences and painters were forced to focus on other subjects such as landscapes.
