Japanese Painting (絵画 pronounced kaiga) is one of the oldest and most revered of the Japanese Arts. Early paintings were greatly influenced by China and India. They were mostly religious themes painted by anonymous monks.
In the 14th century (Muromachi period) a distinctively Zen style of painting emerged. A simple monochrome ink was used in quick and spontaneous brush strokes with minimal detail.
