In 1769 James Cook and the HMS Endeavour embarked on a remarkable scientific journey to Tahiti. Scientists of the day realized that the planets orbit the sun and they even knew that Jupiter was 5 times further from the the sun then the earth. However, they were unable to measure these distances in miles. This was one of the most puzzling scientific problems of Cook's time much like string theory is today.

Teahupoʻo is a deadly surfing spot in the south-west of Tahiti island where waves are regularly 2 to 3 meters and break over a shallow reef. These are not the largest waves in the world but it is one of the most challenging reef breaks nonetheless. The reef is shallow and sharp and is certain death for a beginner.
