The Desperate Man By Gustave Courbet

posted by Ally, Spacious Planet, October 10, 2011

Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) was a French painter who led the 19th-century French Realist painting movement. Courbet is pictured here in a self-portrait entitled The Desperate Man.

Courbet painted, landscapes, seascapes, still-lifes and figurative compositions. He was known for depicting the harshness in life, challenging the conventions of his time. He believed in painting from direct experience. He often tackled controversial topics such as social issues and erotic themes. Many of his contemporaries considered him to be a socialist and a savage.

Courbet said this of himself: I am fifty years old and I have always lived in freedom; let me end my life free; when I am dead let this be said of me: He belonged to no school, to no church, to no institution, to no academy, least of all to any régime except the régime of liberty.
