Japanese Emperor Introduction
The Emperor of Japan is the symbolic ruler of Japan. Under Japan's constitution, the Emperor is the "symbol of the state and the unity of the people". Basically, the Emperor is the ceremonial figurehead of the country.
Historically the emperor of Japan has been viewed as a God (the idea of Arahitogami) and has been the leader of the military and government. However, Japanese emperors have always been controlled by political forces.
Emperor Akihito is the current emperor of Japan. He has been the Emperor since his father Hirohito (Showa) died in 1989.
Internationally, there is a great deal of controversy surrounding the Japanese Imperial Family. Especially surrounding their role in WWII.
