posted by tom, Spacious Planet, December 29, 2011

African dance is a broad category of dance encompassing hundreds of dance traditions from Africa.

Traditionally, African dance has had many functions in African culture:
  • dances of celebration
  • rites of passage
  • welcoming dances
  • war dances
  • spiritual dances

In Africa, as in other world cultures, dance is a form of human communication, art and entertainment. African dances are performed to a variety of African music often involving
vocal music and/or drums. Traditionally, many African dances are performed in elaborate decorative costumes.
