Diet Coke and Mentos was a little experiment with common everyday snacks: two litter bottles of diet coke and mint mentos. It turns out that the caffeine, potassium benzoate, aspartame, and CO2 gas in the diet coke cause a jet-like eruption when mixed with the gelatin in mentos.
The video went viral in 2002 and many variations have been made. Popular TV shows such as mythBusters have also performed the experiment. The experiment became popular in public schools across the United States as a way to teach chemistry to kids.
