For thousands of years outdoor bathing has been a integral part of many cultures such as the onsen baths of Japan and the hot springs and saunas of Northern Europe. Bathing in a natural setting has long been esthetically pleasing but in recent years the popularity of outdoor baths has exploded. Initially, garden baths gained popularity with luxury hotels but recently the trend has moved to the home as privacy features are giving homeowners the confidence to bathe in the great outdoors.
There are several important considerations when designing a garden bath such as giving the bath a view of the garden while ensuring the privacy of the bather. Ideally, privacy features blend into the natural setting. Natural looking thatch fences, forests, vegetation or landscaped hills that obscure views of the bath are popular methods for ensuring a private bathing experience.
