The answer of course ... is tradition. The Tomatina festival originated in 1944-1945 in the repressive atmosphere of post-war Spain. There are numerous theories on how it began:
- Angry citizens attacking a unpopular local politician at a festival
- A crowd throwing tomatoes at a bad musician
- A pie fight amongst friends
- The fun aftermath of a tomato truck accident
How ever it started ... it was a great idea and has brought the tiny town of 9000 residents international fame as the international press flock to Buñol to get coverage of the annual chaos.
