Impressions

The Daitokuji Temple is a complex of 21 temples located on large grounds. Only four temples are normally open to the public. In the autum season they open all the temples for a few weeks.

Details

Daitokuji temple is a branch of the Rinzai sect of Japanese Zen Buddhism. Like almost every other group of old temples in Kyoto many of the temples buildings have been burned down and rebuilt at various times in history. The temple was completely rebuilt in the 15th century. The temple has a long history of being used by the masters of the Japanese tea ceremony such as Sen no Rikyu and Kobori Enshu. Some of the main buildings are: Hatto (Dharma Hall) Hojo (Abbot’s Quarters) Sanmon (Mountain Gate) Butsuden (Buddha Hall) Yokushitsu (Bath House) Kyozo (Sutra Library)
