This shrine is one of many Ebisu shrines throughout Japan dedicated to Ebisu (the god of wealth). Ebisu is a very popular god. People come here to pray for luck in business. You can buy charms that will bring you financial luck.
I attended this shrine during the very popularToka Ebisu Festival in 2008. The festival is held every January. |

During the Toka (meaning 10th) Ebisu Festival around a milllion pass through Ebisu Shrine. Ebisu Shrine is a small shrine from the 16th century. People pray to Ebe-san (the god Ebisu) would is the god of money and business.
The shrine sells bamboo fukusasa loaded with charms. These charms are supposed to bring luck in business. It looks like big business with a million people shuffling through buying that over priced junk.
At the end of the festival they carry colorful palanquins through the street. The streets are decorated with colorful latterns and geishas are involved in the festivities. |
