Dōtonbori (道頓堀) is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Osaka.
It is one street which runs parallel to the Dōtonbori canal. It is the most neon lit street in Osaka. Some of the store fronts have huge signs or models. It is really cool.
It is one of the best streets to buy some souvenirs and taste local delicacies such as okonomiyaki and takoyaki .. yum. |

Some facts I learned on my trip:
* dotonburi used to be a brothel street (pleasure district)
* in the 1600s the street was the theatre district of Osaka with Kabuki theaters and five Bunraku theaters. The last of these was destroyed by bombs in WWII.
* dotonburi is popular with japanese tourists as well as foreigners. |
Advice

This neighbourhood is all about eating. Go there hungry and please don't eat at McDonalds as I saw many foreigners doing. I suggest:
*Otakoya: a famous and popular takoyaki stand
* Kani Doraku. A crab restaurant ... how to find it ... it is the one with a giant crab out front. This is one of the most famous spots in Osaka.
* Hariju: A little pricey ... but don't miss this chance to try some Japanese beef. It is very soft. This restaurant dates back to 1924.
It is not that long a street ... so you can ask somebody where these restaurants are. But try to pick someone who looks local ... remember there are also lots of Japanese tourists on this street. |
