Hiroshima is a reasonably large city of about 1 million people.
On August 6, 1945, Hiroshima was chosen by the Americans as the first ever target of an atomic bomb dropped on a human population. As a result, 200,000 civilians lost their lives. Since then the people of Hiroshima have become international advocates of peace and nuclear de-armourment.
Many of the best spots to visit are related to peace or memorials to the bomb victims. These can be very somber places to visit .. however they are very well done. Hiroshima is a wonderful place to visit. |

Hiroshima's Peace Park is Hiroshima's most important attraction. The park contains the memorial museum. The museum exhibit presents the facts of the atomic bombing, with the aim of contributing to the abolition of nuclear weapons throughout the world. It is one of the most popular of Hiroshima's destinations for school trips. It has many international visitors as well.
The Peace Memorial Museum collects and displays belongings left by the victims, photos, and other materials that convey the horror of that event. It also has exhibits that describe Hiroshima before and after the bombings.
It also talks about the issues of the nuclear age. Hiroshima's deepest wish is the elimination of all nuclear weapons.
Another nice place to visit is the island of Miyajima located 40 minutes from the city center by train and ferry. |

The Peace Memorial Museum is one of the most inspiring places I have visited. It is a little depressing .. but I think everyone should go. It makes you think. |
