Anao Ji Temple is a medium sized wooden structure.
There are different myths and legends around most temples in Japan. It is said that praying to the black lying budha at Anao Ji Temple can cure disease.
I had the oppourtunity to see the lying black budha. It really looks like something you would see in thailand. It is not typical for Japan. |

In the main hall is a life size budha (Shaka Nehan) statue that is believed to cure illnesses. People believe that rubbing the budha can cure illness. You are supposed to rub the part of the budha where you have an illness.
I heard a legend about this temple and I am not sure if it is true:
In the year 962 a priest at the temple was shot by a samurai. When the samurai warrior entered the temple to steal gold from the temple artifacts he found that a budha statue had a arrow in her chest and was bleeding. This made the samurai repent. He spent the rest of his life at the temple and went on to fund many of the temples works. His grave now located in the temple grounds. |

The most interesting artifact at this temple is the black reclining budha ... but I am told it is not often on display.
The temple has a beautiful, black, reclining Buddha, but it is not often on display.
There is a beautiful garden here too. They are from the Muromachi period.
