Chishaku-in is not the most popular temple in Japan but it has a nice garden and some important works of art. It is the head templel for the Shingon Buddhism Chizan sect of Buddhism. I recommend a visit for people who are temple lovers.

Details

Chishaku-in dates from the 14th century. The Shoheki-ga paintings on display here are considered national treasures. Chishaku-in has had a few fires in its history (like most other temples in kyoto it seems) and about half of the paintings have been lost.

Advice

Bus 208 or 206 from Kyoto Station. The bus stop is calles Higashiyama-Nanajo or "Shichijo". The bus ride is only 10 minutes or so. This temple is very close to Sanjusangen-do and you can walk in about 3 minutes.
