Do Japanese learn marshal arts in school

kendo looks scary
Although I am Japanese I did not attend high school in Japan. What marshal arts to Japanese learn in school. I assume it is different by school district and public vs. private school. If you are Japanese please post your experience. Do girls learn as well?

I have some Japanese friends who learned Kendo in high school but that was at a guys high school. I am curious what the girls learned.
