How many German beers are there? Which are the best?

where to start

There are about 5000 german beers. Its hard to know where to start.

The most important influence on German beer is the beer purity laws (Reinheitsgebot).

These date back to 1516 and have been updated recently. The laws state that German beer must use only hops and barley-malt and water.
