Censorship of Meiji and Taisho

During the Meiji era Japan was heavily influenced by the west for the first time. Christian nations put a lot of pressure on the Japanese to censor erotic art. There was little erotic art produced during Meiji.

During the Taisho and early Showa period Japan became very militaristic. The government started regulating every aspect of life and censorship only grew.

After the war the American's liberalised Japan. However, strangely there are still many restrictions. For example, genitals and penitration can not be shown in Japanese porn.
