What is the best region for onsen?

Seems like there are hot springs just about everywhere in Japan. But what are the really famous / great spots?

Izu Peninsula

If you are close to Tokyo the best place is Izu. It is about a two hour train ride to the south of Tokyo. There are many quaint onsen towns in this area. In the summer it is also popular for the beach.

Nagano

I like Nagano. Very rural and mountainous. Lots of snow in winter. Snowy outdoor onsen is tops. Izu gets no snow and is more topical side.
