Is it possible for a vegetarian to survive in Japan?

I am a pretty strict vegetarian. Just wondering if I can avoid all forms of meat (cheese and milk are fine). Any recommendations of types of food I should try.

experience with my friend

My friend visited Japan and is vegetarian.

If you are strict vegetarian it is very difficult to have tastey food in Japan. There are usually some vegetables ... but nothing too interesting.

Be careful because many Japanese people will assume that vegetarians can eat fish.
