Are Japanese superficial?

I don't mean to start a flame thread here .... but what do you think?
I mean generally. Asian people in particular are always telling me
Japanese are superficial. I have lived in Japan a while and I am not
sure I agree.

not really but ..

many Japanese fathers don't play a big role in their children's life.
This is culturally ingrained. In divorce, the mother almost always
get the exclusive custody. I think this is a big reason for many
problems in Japan.

The Japanese talk about food all the time. It is their favourite
topic of conversation. When you turn on the tv .. there are nothing
but shows about eating food.

Some of those hostess / hosto types look unbelievably superficial ...
but I never talk to people like that ... maybe their not .. but tend
to doubt it.
