The Canadian flag did not become official until 1965 although it is based on the maple leaf symbol dating back to the 1890s.

The flag itself was designed and approved for use by the British in 1945 after Canada fought with distinction in WWII. Twenty years later it replaced the union jack and became Canada's national flag.
