Professional sumo (大相撲) dates date to the Edo Period. Some of the original wrestlers were ronin (a type of samurai).

However, sumo is very old with its roots in other asian traditions such as Korean Ssireum, Mongolian wrestling and Chinese Shuai jiao.

Some chinese art from as early as 220 BCE depicts wrestlers that are engaged in sumo-like poses.
