The name for a sumo ring is dohyō (土俵). The ring is 4.55 metres in diameter. It is made of bales of rice leaves above a platform. The platform is clay and sand.

Each match is played on a fresh dohyō. It is prepared by an official called the yobidashi.

Sometimes a roof may be suspended over the dohyō which gives it the look of a shinto shrine.
