When did baseball become popular in Japan? Whats the history?

The first teams sprung up a long time ago in 1878. The first team was the Shimbashi Athletic Club but other teams soon popped up.

As early as 1896 the Shimbashi Athletic Club defeated an American team Yokohama Country and Athletic Club 29 to 4. Indicating that Japanese skill in the game grew remarkably quickly. By the early 1900's many Japanese universities had teams and they travelled to the US for tournaments against american teams. I guess the game's popularity snowballed from there.
