Member of X Japan claim that his death was an accident that Hide was just trying to fix his back pain with the towel or something. It does not sound too likely to me. The police said it was suicide.

Hide died on May 2, 1998. He had been drinking all night and hanged himself in his bathroom with a towel. At least three fans have done copy cat suicides. This is a very sad thing. No one really knows why.
