Karneval is a Catholic festival which is big in the Catholic areas of Germany. It occurs just before Lent (Catholic period of fasting) and people take a last opportunity to enjoy themselves.

People dress up in costumes during Karneval and party. There are big parades in cities such as Cologne and Mainz. The Karneval ends the day before Ash Wednesday.
