Is it true that JFK said "I am a jelly donut" in German when he visited Berlin?

Yes Kennedy's statement was grammatically correct and made sense in context. It was one of Kennedy's best speaches at the height of cold war tensions.

I heard that technically JFK did say "Ich bin ein Berliner" and Berliner is a donut in German. However, the audience did not notice. In the context of his speech what he said made sense. This is mostly an urban legend.
