被爆者 Hibakusha is the Japanese name for the survivors of the bombings. It means "explosion-affected people". The horror of the bombing is the root of Japan's postwar pacifism and the Hibakusha have been leaders in the fight to abolish nuclear weapons and other peace initiatives.

There are currently 251,834 hibakusha recognized by the Japanese government. About %1 have illnesses caused by the explosion.
