Succession to the throne is by the male line.

There have been nine female Emperors (out of 125 total). Female Emperors have been a temporary measure that was used in the past when no male heir was available. However, it seems that modern Japanese politicans are not as liberal minded. The Japanese government now makes the rules about transfer of the throne ... and they explicitly exclude women from ever taking the throne.

For a long time Princess Aiko had no male children and there was a lot of stress about that. Politicians were arguing for some years about changing the rules of succession. However, eventually Princess Kiko had a son and they never ended up changing anything.
